This
section describes how to use the various elements and features of
the Photo Publisher program.
Program
Layout
The
layout of Nifty Photo Publisher is made up of the following parts:
-
The
Thumbnail section is where you select if thumbnails are to be
generated and how large you need them.
-
The
Text section is where you select if you want copyright text or
a description to be added to your pictures, and also where font
selection, size and text placement are selected.
-
The
bottom section of Photo Publisher is where you select your working
folder and finally start the image conversion process.

As
you can see, image conversion is just a matter of selecting some options
and then leave it to Nifty Photo Publisher to finish the job just
the way that you want it.
Choosing
Your Working Directory
The
first step when using Photo Publisher is to select a directory where
the pictures to be converted are located. This is done by clicking
on the Select Directory button at the bottom of the main program window.
The Directory Selection window will come up and you can now select
your working directory. It is important to know that Nifty Photo Publisher
never writes over your original files, but instead creates sub-directories
where your processed files will be located.

Creating
Thumbnails For Your Images
When
you are preparing to process your images for publishing, you can select
if you wish to have a thumbnail image created for you. Thumbnail images
are smaller representations of the original ones, they can be arranged
in an image gallery, and linked to the actual files which are then
shown when the end user clicks on the thumbnail image. To this purpose,
the Thumbnail selection has to be checked in order to enable the thumbnail
image generation.

Fig. 2-3: The Thumbnail Image Section
Next
you need to select the actual thumbnail size. There are various ways
in which you can do this. The most simple one is to input the width
and height of the thumbnail in the boxes provided. This will result
in all generated thumbnails to be the same size. Alternatively, you
can select that the thumbnails instead have all the same width or
all the same height. This is done by entering only one value either
for width or height and selecting the Keep Aspect Ratio option.
Finally,
you can select to have all thumbnails sized in a ratio according to
their original size. Ratios can be entered in the same thumbnail size
fields by adding the percentage(%) symbol after the width and height
number. Simply put, if you type just a number in the width and height
fields, it will be interpreted by Nifty Photo Publisher as the size
in pixels, if you add the percentage sign, it will be interpreted
as a ratio of the original image.
Resizing Your Images
As
from version 2 of Nifty Photo Publisher, it is possible to also create
a resized version of the picture. Similar to the thumbnail option,
the resize feature allows you to select the size properties of the
processed image. The width, height and aspect ratio are exactly the
same.
Adding
A Text Description to Your Images
Nifty
Photo Publisher allows you to add text over your generated images
if so desired. This can be applied for copyright messages, descriptive
messages, or any other use that strikes your imagination. Again, the
Text option has to be first enabled for this to work.

Fig. 2-4: The Text Options Section
You
can add your text by typing it in the Text field provided and selecting
the position where to place this text on the image. Placing the text
in any of the picture's corners is just a matter of selecting one
of the combinations obtained by mixing the Top, Bottom, Right and
Left options. If you wish that the text is placed in another position,
you can select the Custom Position option and then select the X and
Y coordinates in pixels where the start of the text will be placed.
Both
the Font type and Size can be easily changed, the first by selecting
the name from the drop-down list and the other by typing in the point
size. To change the text color, click on the Color button, and select
one of the standard colors displayed. If the color you need is not
displayed, click on the Define Custom Colors button and select the
color from the palette or alternatively just enter the Red, Green
and Blue component values to obtain your color. Then, click on the
Add To Custom Colors button and you will have a new color to select
in the color list.
Finally,
you can add a border underneath your text so that it stands out better
over the picture. This is done by clicking on the Text Border option
to select it and on the Border Color button to choose the border's
color, just as you did for the main text itself. That's all there
is to text placement. Now you can start the conversion process and
see some results!
Overlaying Logos On Your Images
Apart
from text, you can also overlay a logo or any other small graphic
on top of your original picture. Similar to the text option, you need
to select where to place the logo. This time however, you have to
select the logo file by clicking on the Open Logo button and selecting
the file from the desired folder. A preview of your selected image
will appear inside the logo section.
Starting
The Image Conversion Process
With
the task of setting the options behind us, now we can just click on
the Begin button to start the image conversion process. Nifty Photo
Publisher will process all the image files contained in the working
directory and show you how the conversion is progressing. Once the
conversion is complete, you will find a new directory for the generated
thumbnails in the working directory if the thumbnail option was chosen
and likewise for the converted images with added text. That's all,
now you can start adding the generated images to your gallery and
transfer them to the desired medium.
